EXPERIENCING THE GIFT OF GOD’S RADICAL LOVE

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge.” Ephesians 3:17-19a NIV

“So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:6-7 NKJV

WE EXPERIENCE GOD’S LOVE WHEN WE MAKE ROOM

1)    WE EXPERIENCE GOD’S GIFT OF LOVE WHEN WE MAKE ROOM IN OUR HEART.
HIS LOVE SHOWS UP AS HOPE.

“and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:5-8 ESV

“The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. RADICAL LOVE

SO WHAT IS RADICAL LOVE? AN EXTREME VIEW OF LOVE

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16 NKJV

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”  1 John 3:16 NIV 

WHY IS LOVE SO IMPORTANT? LOVE IS WHAT MATTERS MOST

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NIV

 “Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14 NIV

THE DISCOVERY OF RADICAL LOVE IS A JOURNEY GOD IS INVITING US TO EXPLORE

THREE DISCOVERIES ABOUT GOD’S LOVE 

1ST DISCOVERY: GOD IS WITH ME.

““The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).”  Matthew 1:23 NIV

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”  Psalm 46:1 NIV

2ND DISCOVERY: GOD LOVED ME WHILE I WAS HIS ENEMY.

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 ESV

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.” Luke 6:27-29  NIV

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. 3RD DISCOVERY: GOD GIVES TO ME KNOWING I CAN’T REPAY HIM.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”  II Corinthians 8:9 NKJV

“But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” Luke 14:13-14 ESV

THE HABIT OF SEEKING GOD

A BIG QUESTION TO CONSIDER: WHAT IS GOD LIKE?

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being…” Hebrews 1:3a NIV

“If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” John 14:7-9 NIV

JESUS’ DISPOSITION TOWARDS PEOPLE IS THE SAME AS GOD’S DISPOSITION TOWARDS PEOPLE

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:16-17 ESV 

TWO BENEFITS OF WORSHIP

1)    WHEN WE WORSHIP GOD WE GIVE HIM WHAT HE DESIRES.

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” John 4:23 ESV

 2)    WORSHIP IS A LIFESTYLE THAT RELEASES SUPERNATURAL POWER.

“Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.” Psalm 8:2 NKJV

“When I cry out to You, then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me.”  Psalm 56:9 NKJV

“But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were loosed.”  Acts 16:25-26 NKJV

THREE SIMPLE HABITS YOU CAN PRACTICE IN YOUR WORSHIP 

1)    PRACTICE PREPARING YOUR HEART FOR WORSHIP.

“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” Matthew 15:8-9 NIV

2)    PRACTICE PUTTING GOD FIRST.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 NKJV

3)    PRACTICE SURRENDERING YOUR TO GOD.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1 NIV 

WORSHIP CAN HAVE MANY EXPRESSIONS, BUT TRUE WORSHIP ISN’T A STYLE. IT’S OUR RESPONSE TO THE VALUE WE PLACE ON GOD’S WORTH.

THE GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN EVER GIVE SOMEONE IS THE GIFT OF CHRIST

GIVING THE GIFT OF CHRIST IS OUR MISSION

‘’Jesus said to his followers, “Go everywhere in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone.”” Mark‬ ‭16:15‬ ‭NCV‬‬‬‬‬‬

“For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”” Romans‬ ‭10:13-15‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

“After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 4 EXERCISES TO HELP US SHARE THE GOSPEL.

1) MAKE A PRAYER LIST

“Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.” Romans‬ ‭10:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬

2) BUILD BRIDGES WITH PEOPLE

“Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’ The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’ So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ ‘Nine hundred gallons of olive oil,’ he replied. 3) BE PREPARED TO SHARE THE GOSPEL

“… Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter‬ ‭3:15‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬

4) INVITE THEM

  1. I MUST ABANDON ALL DISTRACTIONS

4 of the biggest distractions that will cause you to miss God’s plan for your life:

I. Fear

“Go wherever I send you and speak whatever I tell you to. And don’t be afraid of the people, for I, the Lord, will be with you and see you through.” Jeremiah 1:7a-8 TLB

II. Wallowing In Your Past Mistakes and Failures 

III. Worrying About What Other People Think Of You

IV. YOUR PLANS ARE A DISTRACTION

1.      How badly do you want to be what God has created you to be?
2.   What are you willing to remove in order to get it?

2. I MUST ADOPT GOD’S PURPOSE 

“… give yourselves completely to God—every part of you… you want to be tools in the hands of God, to be used for his good purposes.” Romans 6:13 TLB

3. I MUST ANTICIPATE GOD’S HELP

“He will always give you all you need from day to day if you will make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.” Luke 12:31 TLB

You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. II) FOUR THINGS TO PRACTICE WHEN SITTING IN GOD’S PRESENCE. 

1) PRACTICE BEING THANKFUL.

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.” Psalm 100:4 NKJV

“This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 NKJV 

2) PRACTICE CASTING ALL YOUR CARES ON HIM IN PRAYER.

3) PRACTICE LETTING HIM KNOW ALL YOUR HOPES AND DREAMS.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…” Philippians 4:6 NKJV

4) PRACTICE THINKING ON HIS PROMISES.

1. I am wanted and I belong.

2. Jesus Knows My Name.

WILL POWER ALONE ISN’T ENOUGH.

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do… For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it… What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” Romans 7:15, 18-20, 24-25 NIV

1) SOMETHING FAR GREATER THAN WILL POWER IS PURPOSE POWER.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” Ephesians 3:20 NKJV

2) THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND ITS POWER COME AS A SEED.

 THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

1)     STOP BEING AFRAID TO EMBARRASS YOURSELF

2)     GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO START BEFORE YOU THINK YOUR READY

3)     HANG OUT WITH OTHER DARING PEOPLE  

HOW CAN I GROW IN DARING GRACE? 

1)     ASK GOD TO DEEPEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF HIS LOVE.

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord…” 2 Peter 1:2 NKJV

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge...” Ephesians 3:16-19a NIV

2)     STEP OUT IN FAITH AND LIVE ON MISSION.

“In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world.” John 17:18 MSG 

“I don’t care about my own life. The most important thing is that I complete my mission, the work that the Lord Jesus gave me—to tell people the Good News about God’s grace.” Acts 20:24 NCV 

“But before people can ask the Lord for help, they must believe in him; and before they can believe in him, they must hear about him; and for them to hear about the Lord, someone must tell them; and before someone can go and tell them, that person must be sent. It is written, “How beautiful is the person who comes to bring good news.” Romans 10:14-15 NCV

3)     STEP OUT IN FAITH AND LIVE ADVENTUROUSLY.

“He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.” 2 Corinthians 5:15 NLT

THE FIFTH FACET OF GOD’S GRACE IS SELFLESS GRACE

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4 NKJV

WHAT IS SELFLESS GRACE? THE GRACE THAT CAUSES ME…

  • TO THINK OF OTHERS

  • TO SERVE OTHERS

  • TO BE GENEROUS 

“And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you— see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:1-7 NIV

FOUR BENEFITS OF GIVING

1)    GIVING BRINGS JOY IN MY TRAILS.

“In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.” 2 Corinthians 8:2 NIV

“… remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, ‘There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.’” Acts 20:35b GNB

  • Believe, believer and believing

  • Pray, prayer and praying

  • Love, lover and loving

  • Give, giver and giving

“…who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross.” Hebrews 12:2b NKJV 

2)    GIVING INCREASES THE FAVOR OF GOD IN MY LIFE.

“For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own…” 2 Corinthians 8:3 NIV

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 NKJV

 “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25 NLT

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 NIV

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” 2 Corinthians 9:6 NIV

3)    GIVING HELPS FREE ME FROM SELFISHNESS AND MATERIALISM.

“They urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.” 2 Corinthians 8:4-5 NIV

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV

“Tell people who are rich at this time not to become egotistical and not to place their hope on their finances, which are uncertain. Instead, they need to hope in God, who richly provides everything for our enjoyment. Tell them to do good, to be rich in the good things they do, to be generous, and to share with others. When they do these things, they will save a treasure for themselves that is a good foundation for the future. That way they can take hold of what is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19 CEB

4)    GIVING HELPS BRING THE COMPLETION TO GOD’S GRACE.

“So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part.” 2 Corinthians 8:6 NIV

“As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!” 2 Corinthians 9:13-15 NLT

 “I am not commanding you to do this. But I am testing how genuine your love is by comparing it with the eagerness of the other churches. You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:8-9 NLT

“But generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their generosity.” Isaiah 32:8 NLT
