BRINGING HOPE TO YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9 NIV

HOW TO HAVE A DIFFICULT CONVERSATION

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.” Matthew 18:15 NIV

 WHEN DO I GO? WHEN IT’S …

·       DISHONORING TO GOD

·       CREATING DAMAGE IN THE RELATIONSHIP

·       HURTING OTHERS

·       HURTING THE INDIVIDUAL

HOW DO I GO?

1)     GO WITH GENTLENESS

“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” Galatians 6:1 NIV

·       GENTLENESS SHOWS MY CARE

“First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:24b NIV

·       GENTLENESS RELEASES GOD’S PRESENCE

“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” Philippians 4:5 NIV

·       GENTLENESS GOES SLOWLY

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1 NIV

 2)     SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ...” Ephesians 4:15a NLT

·       SPEAK ONLY WORDS THAT BUILD UP

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:9 NIV

“There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18 AMPC

 ·       REMEMBER PEOPLE CAN’T READ YOUR MIND

“By long forbearance and calmness of spirit a judge or ruler is persuaded, and soft speech breaks down the most bonelike resistance.”   Proverbs 25:15 AMPC

·       THERE WILL BE TIMES YOU MUST BE FIRM

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted…” Proverbs 27:5-6a NIV

3)     FOLLOW A GOD HONORING PROCESS

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17 NIV

“My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” James 5:19-20 NIV

Additional Bible Verses to Study:

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:12-14 NIV

“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 NIV
