What Am I Here For?

Let love be your greatest aim… Love is the foundation, the bedrock and the pillars that we need to be able to serve in the way that God has intended for us. 1 Corinthians 14:1 (TLB)

In this life we have three great lasting qualities—faith, hope and love. But the greatest of them is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 (PHILLIPS)

Why do we start here? Because everything you and I do hinges on love

“Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence." This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.” These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.” Matthew 22:37-40 (MSG)

If I had the gift of being able to speak in other languages without learning them and could speak in every language there is in all of heaven and earth, but didn’t love others, I would only be making noise. If I had the gift of prophecy and knew all about what is going to happen in the future, knew everything about everything, but didn’t love others, what good would it do? Even if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love. If I gave everything I have to poor people, and if I were burned alive for preaching the Gospel but didn’t love others, it would be of no value whatever. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (TLB)

1. Without Love All I Say Is Ineffective

If I had the gift of being able to speak in other languages without learning them and could speak in every language there is in all of heaven and earth, but didn’t love others, I would only be making noise. 1 Corinthians 13:1 (TLB)

2. Without Love All I Know Is Incomplete

If I had the gift of prophecy and knew all about what is going to happen in the future, knew everything about everything, but didn’t love others, what good would it do? 1 Corinthians 13:2a (TLB)

3. Without Love What I Believe Would be Insufficient

Even if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love. 1 Corinthians 13:2b (TLB)

4. Without one All I Give Is Insignificant

If I gave everything I have to poor people…but didn’t love others, it would be of no value whatever. 1 Corinthians 13:3a (TLB)

5. Without Love All That I Accomplish Is Inadequate

if I were burned alive for preaching the Gospel but didn’t love others, it would be of no value whatever. 1 Corinthians 13:3a (TLB)

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Galatians 5:6b (NIV)

…don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13b (NLT)

It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others. Ephesians 2:10 (TLB)

14 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. 15 He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. 16 “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. 17 The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. 18 But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money. 19 “After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. 20 The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.’ 21 “The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together! 22 “The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more.’ 23 “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ 24 “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. 25 I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’ 26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, 27 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ 28 “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. Matthew 25:14-29 (NLT)
