REMEMBERING JESUS:
SPEAKING TRUTH COURAGEOUSLY TO OUR CULTURE
5-28-16

“For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” I Corinthians 11:23-25 (NKJV)

“But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public…” John 7:13a (NLT)

“One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.” Acts 18:9 (NIV)

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;” I Peter 2: 9 (NKJV)

1)    MATERIALISM  WORLDVIEW: ONLY MATERIAL THINGS MATTER

“Speaking to the people, he went on, “Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot.” Luke 12:15 (MSG)

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” I Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)

THE ANTIDOTE: GENEROSITY

“Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.” I Timothy 6:17-19 (NKJV)

2)    HEDONISM  WORLDVIEW: PLEASURE AND HAPPINESS ARE WHAT MATTER MOST IN LIFE

“You’re addicted to thrills? What an empty life! The pursuit of pleasure is never satisfied.” Proverbs 21:17 (MSG)

THE ANTIDOTE: SELF DENIAL

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 16:24-25 (NKJV)

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.” Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV)

3)  INDIVIDUALISM  WORLDVIEW: I AM GOD

“And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” So he awoke from his sleep, and said, “I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.” Judges 16:20 (NKJV)

THE ANTIDOTE: SERVANT HOOD

“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” Philippians 2:4-5 (NLT)

“So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:42-45 (NLT)

4)  COLLECTIVISM WORLDVIEW: GOVERNMENT IS GOD

And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:21 (NKJV)

THE ANTIDOTE: TRUSTING GOD

“Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:17-18 (NKJV)

“Therefore, do not lose your boldness, which has great reward.” Hebrews 10:35 (TLV)
