FRESH START WEEK 5
2-6-16

THE DECISION FOR A FRESH START REQUIRES US PAYING THE PRICE FOR REAL CHANGE

“You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance.” Psalms 65:11 (NKJV)

“…continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:12b-13 (NIV)

THE STORY OF GIDEON’S FRESH START

“Now the Angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash ….while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites. And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.” Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.” Judges 6:11-16 (NKJV)

*FIRST HE HAD TO COME TO GRIPS WITH HIS CURRENT SITUATION

*SECOND HE HAD TO MAKE A CHOICE

*THIRD HE HAD TO MAKE SOME COMMITMENTS

1) MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO BE A GIVER

“ Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You.” And He said, “I will wait until you come back.” Judges 6:18 (NKJV)

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 (NIV)

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10 (NIV)

2) MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO A DIFFERENT PATH OF WORSHIP

“That same night the Lord said to him, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God… Judges 6:25-26a (NIV)

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

3) MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO COURAGEOUS RELATIONSHIPS

“But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.” Judges 7:4 NIV

“The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.” Proverbs 12:26 (NKJV)

“Spend time with the wise and you will become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer.” Proverbs 13:20 (NCV)

4) MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO BREAK OUT AND LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE

“Gideon and the hundred men …...  blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” Judges 7:19-20 (NIV)
