TO BUILD BRIDGES TO CONNECTION AND RECONCILIATION WE MUST FORGIVE

WEEK 3

4-25-15

WHY IS FORGIVENESS SO IMPORTANT?

1) BECAUSE RESENTMENT DOESN’T WORK

            *IT’S UNREASONABLE

To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do. (Job 5:2 GNB)

           *IT’S UNHELPFUL

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,’ they will be in danger of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say, ‘You fool,’ they will be in danger of fiery hell. (Matthew 5:22 CEB)

           *IT’S UNHEALTHY

Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. (Hebrews 12:15b NLT)

(Ephesians 4:26-27 GNB)

(2 Timothy 2:23-26 NIV)

2) BECAUSE GOD FORGAVE ME

Put up with each other, and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (Colossians 3:13 GW)

3) BECAUSE I WILL NEED FORGIVENESS IN  MY FUTURE

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Matthew 6:14-15 NIV)

HOW CAN I FORGIVE?

1) ADMIT YOUR HURT

So I was completely quiet, silent. I kept my peace, but it did no good. My pain got worse. My heart got hot inside me; while stewing over it, the fire burned. Then I spoke out with my tongue: (Psalms 39:2-3 CEB)

2) RELEASE YOUR OFFENDER

Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! (Matthew 18:21-22 NLT)

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (Luke 6:27-28 NIV)

3) PURSUE GOD’S PEACE

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 NLT)

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all. (2 Thessalonians 3:16 NLT)
