THE FOUR MOST COMMON RESPONSES TO GOD ASKING *RUN *ARGUE *WRESTLE *YIELD
JONAH : WHAT ARE YOU RUNNING FROM?
“Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the LORD. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the LORD by sailing to Tarshish. Jonah 1:2-3 (NLT)
TWO THINGS WE RUN FROM
1) WE RUN FROM GOD’S PRESENCE
Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God… Genesis 3:8 (NKJV)
Where can I go to get away from your Spirit? Where can I run from you? Psalms 139:7 (NCV)
2) WE RUN FROM GOD’S CALLING
God never changes his mind about the people he calls and the things he gives them. Romans 11:29 (NCV)
IF YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING LIKE JONAH WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
1) REALIZE WHERE YOU ARE!
Waters have grasped me to the point of death; the deep surrounds me. Seaweed is wrapped around my head at the base of the undersea mountains. I have sunk down to the underworld; its bars held me with no end in sight. Jonah 2:5-6 (CEB)
Good understanding gains favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard. Proverbs 13:15 (NKJV)
You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. Revelation 3:17 (NLT)
2) REMEMBER TO CALL OUT TO GOD
As my life was slipping away, I remembered the LORD. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple Jonah 2:7 (NLT)
3) RESPOND WITH OBEDIENCE
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh... Jonah 3:1-3a (NKJV)
When the message reached the king of Nineveh, he got up off his throne, threw down his royal robes, dressed in burlap, and sat down in the dirt. Then he issued a public proclamation throughout Nineveh… Everyone must turn around, turn back from an evil life… Jonah 3:6-9 (MSG)
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:18 (NIV)
