BETTER TOGETHER
Week 3 10-17-15

In the same way, even though we are many individuals, Christ makes us one body and individuals who are connected to each other. Romans 12:5 (GW)

WHAT CAUSES RELATIONSHIPS TO DISCONNECT AND WHAT CAN I DO TO BUILD THEM?

1)    SELFISHNESS DESTROYS RELATIONSHIPS

Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from the selfish desires that war within you. You want things, but you do not have them. So you are ready to kill and are jealous of other people, but you still cannot get what you want. So you argue and fight.  James 4:1-2 (NCV)

Selfish people cause trouble, but you will live a full life if you trust the Lord. Proverbs 28:25 (CEV)

ANTIDOTE: SELFLESSNESS BUILDS

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. Philippians 2:4 (NLT)

The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life. Galatians 6:8 (MSG)

My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. Galatians 5:16 (MSG)

2)    PRIDE DESTROYS RELATIONSHIPS

Pride only leads to arguments, Proverbs 13:10a (NCV)

Pride leads to destruction; a proud attitude brings ruin. Proverbs 16:18 (NCV)

First pride, then the crash— the bigger the ego, the harder the fall. Proverbs 16:18 (MSG)

ANTIDOTE: HUMILITY BUILDS

Finally, everyone must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, and be humble. 1 Peter 3:8 (GW)

3)    INSECURITIES DESTROYS RELATIONSHIPS

The fear of human opinion disables: Proverbs 29:25a (MSG)

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” Genesis 3:10 (NIV)

ANTIDOTE: LOVE BUILDS

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear 1 John 4:18a  (NIV)

All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love... And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid 1 John 4:15-17 (NLT)

4)    RESENTMENT DESTROYS RELATIONSHIPS

To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do. Job 5:2 (GNB)

When my thoughts were bitter and my feelings were hurt, I was as stupid as an animal; I did not understand you. Psalms 73:21-22 (GNB)

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Hebrews 12:15 (NLT)

ANTIDOTE: FORGIVENESS BUILDS

Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Colossians 3:13 (NLT)

In the past we were foolish too… We lived doing evil and being jealous. People hated us and we hated each other. But then the kindness and love of God our Savior was made known. He saved us because of his mercy, not because of any good things we did. He saved us through the washing that made us new people. He saved us by making us new through the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:3-5 (ERV)
