7   DECISIONS OF A HISTORY MAKER

                                                                                    DECISION 5 WK5
                                                                                          JOSEPH
                                                                 HISTORY MAKERS CHOOSE TO FORGIVE

I WILL GREET EACH NEW DAY WITH A FORGIVING SPIRIT

Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. (Genesis 50:19, 20 NKJV)

PROBLEM WITH HOLDING ONTO GRUDGES IS THEY GROW
But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘ Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. (Matthew 5:22 NIV)

If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” (John 20:23 NIV)

But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
(Mark 11:26 NKJV)

And he was there in the prison. But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. (Genesis 39:20, 21 NKJV)

WHY SHOULD I FORGIVE?

1)  IT'S THE ULTIMATE GIFT TO MYSELF
Forgive, and you will be forgiven.  (Luke 6:37 NKJV)

2)  BECAUSE GOD HAS FORGIVEN ME
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.                  (Ephesians 4:32 NIV)

3)  BECAUSE I AM GOING TO NEED FORGIVENESS AGAIN
But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
(Mark 11:26 NKJV)

4).  BECAUSE UNFORGIVENESS DOESN'T WORK

But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. (James 3:14, 15 NIV)

5  BECAUSE BITTERNESS AND RESENTMENT CAN BE PASS ON GENERATIONALLY
... lest  any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; (Hebrews 12:15b NKJV)

HOW CAN I FORGIVE?

1)  I WILL GREET EACH NEW DAY WITH A FORGIVING SPIRIT

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. (Colossians 3:12, 13 NKJV)

2) ASK GOD TO HELP YOU RELEASE IT IN PRAYER

He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. (I John 2:10 NKJV)

3)  TURN YOUR PAIN INTO SOMETHING GOOD
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21 NKJV)

4)  GET INTO A SMALL GROUP
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another (Hebrews 10:24, 25 a NIV)
