A.ASSISTING THE POOR

The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern. (Proverbs 29:7 NIV)

WHAT CAUSES POVERTY?

POOR CHOICES
--complacency
Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. (Proverbs 10:4 NIV)

Work your garden—you’ll end up with plenty of food; play and party—you’ll end up with an empty plate.             (Proverbs 28:19 MSG)

It’s stupid to try to get something for nothing, or run up huge bills you can never pay. (Proverbs 17:18 MSG)

CIRCUMSTANCES
“A person who has an easy life has no appreciation for misfortune. He thinks it is the fate of those who slip up.         (Job 12:5 GW)

1)Calamity
Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them. (Ecclesiastes 9:12 NIV)

2) Culture
But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. (Deuteronomy 26:6 NKJV)

3) Corruption
Even when the land of the poor produces good crops, they get cheated out of what they grow. (Proverbs 13:23 CEV )

4) Cycle of hopelessness
My days pass by without hope, (Job 7:6aGNT)

I’m written off as a lost cause, one more statistic, a hopeless case. Abandoned as already dead,  (Psalm 88:5 MSG)

( WHAT IS THE ANSWER?)
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33 NIV)

“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:9-13, NIV)

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, (Luke 4:18 NIV)

HOW DO WE ASSIST THE POOR?
1) Treat them with dignity
Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all. (Proverbs 22:2 NIV)

Live in peace with each other. Do not be proud, but make friends with those who seem unimportant. Do not think how smart you are. (Romans 12:16 NCV)

2) Offer opportunity
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10 NKJV)

If there are poor among you, in one of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be selfish or greedy toward them. But give freely to them, and freely lend them whatever they need. (Deuteronomy 15:7, 8 NCV)

3) Speak out against injustice
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31:8, 9 NIV)

Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 82:3, 4 NIV)

4) Share generously
Share your food with the hungry and bring poor, homeless people into your own homes. When you see someone who has no clothes, give him yours, and don’t refuse to help your own relatives. (Isaiah 58:7 NCV)

If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?                        (James 2:15, 16 NKJV)

Being kind to the poor is like lending to the Lord; he will reward you for what you have done. (Proverbs 19:17 NCV)

WHY SHOULD WE ASSIST THE POOR?

IT HONORS GOD
He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.                 (Proverbs 14:31 NKJV)

IT TEACHES ME FAITH
Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! God chose the poor in the world to be rich with faith and to receive the kingdom God promised to those who love him. (James 2:5 NCV)
